About IBIS OIS

IBIS Open Innovation in Science (IBIS OIS) is a three‑year platform funded by the Novo Nordisk Foundation (2025–2028). IBIS OIS is implemented as part of IBIS , which is jointly funded by  Gates Foundation and Novo Nordisk Foundation. Together, these initiatives work to advance foundational knowledge and enabling technologies for future biofertilizer solutions.

IBIS OIS brings together researchers and industry partners to collaborate openly on shared scientific challenges. By supporting precompetitive, patent‑free research, the platform aims to accelerate innovation across the entire biofertilizer value chain.

Purpose of IBIS OIS

IBIS OIS focuses on:

  • Addressing foundational knowledge gaps in biofertilizer science
  • Developing enabling technologies that support discovery, development, and field translation
  • Case studies that explore new approaches and methodologies
  • Strengthening collaboration between academia and industry through an open innovation model

The platform builds on successful OIS programs such as ODIN  and Plant2Food , which have successfully demonstrated the value of open, patent‑free collaboration to accelerate scientific knowledge.

The IBIS OIS platform is an integrated part of IBIS. The platform is headed by the IBIS OIS Board that determines the budget and themes for funding calls and selects projects for funding. The IBIS OIS Board consists of representatives from both universities and industry.

During a call round, all project applications will be thoroughly reviewed by the IBIS OIS Board as well as an International Review Panel, consisting of three experts from non-Danish universities. The IBIS OIS Board will make the final decision on funding.

The IBIS OIS secretariat is based at Aarhus University and is responsible for all pre‑funding activities, including call preparation, matchmaking, ideation events, and applicant support.
